Silk Road Project
Social Studies Giant Postcard Project:
The Silk Road
How did the Silk Road contributed to the economic and cultural development of Asia and Europe?
Background Information: In class we have studied the Silk Road for the past several days. The Silk Road was an ancient trade route between China in the east and Europe in the west. Many items were traded back and forth on the Silk Road and this route played an important part in advancing cultures all around the world.
TASK :
For this task you will have to pretend you are a trader, traveler, or bandit along the Silk Road. You must write a postcard to a friend or family member about your journey. There are many different options to this task and it will require you to use your imagination and the many resources you have available to you to help craft your writing.
Below is a list of ideas to get you started:
Paragraph 1. Who will you be? (3 or more sentences describing yourself and your situation to the reader)
A. Will you be a person from China or a person from Europe?
B. Will you be a person who trades goods like silk and spices, a bandit on the hunt for valuable items, or a missionary who is trying to spread your religious and cultural ideas.
Paragraph 2. What will you write about?
A. Describe the items that you will be trading or the ideas that you hope to spread. (10 items which will be drawn on the front of your postcard)
B. Describe the many challenges you face on your journey in terms of geography. (At least 3 challenges)
C. Describe the things that you may have "learned" from being in a new and foreign land. (At least 3 things that have amazed you)
Paragraph 3 • How will these new and different things that you have learned help your own people when you get back to your home town?
Front of Post Card * Make sure to draw a picture or series of pictures displaying detailed features witnessed on your journey. You may find and print out pictures from the internet or sketch them yourself. Please provide a caption with a brief summary of what the drawing represents on the front of the post card.
Also, you must accurately address the post card. (address may be fictitious, but the format must be correct!)
